How to use the white screen

Press Full screen white or tap the preview and your whole screen turns white. Set brightness and color temperature before you start, or change them from the control bar while the screen is lit. Your settings are saved in this browser for next time.

  • In full screen, tap the screen (or move the mouse) to show the control bar. It hides itself, along with the cursor, after a few seconds.
  • To exit, press ✕ in the control bar or the Esc key. On phones, the back gesture works too.
  • Set the auto-off timer and the white screen closes by itself when time is up — handy for a bedtime night light.
  • With Keep screen on checked, supported browsers stop the display from dimming or locking while the white screen is up.
  • On a computer, Pop-out light window opens a small resizable white window you can park next to a video call to light your face. Double-click it to make just that window full screen.

Color temperature presets explained

Color temperature describes the color of light in kelvin (K). Lower numbers are warmer and yellower, higher numbers cooler and bluer. Most monitors and phones are calibrated to the sRGB white point, D65, which is about 6500K — so Pure white (6500K) is the brightest white your screen can produce. Other temperatures are made by turning down some of the red, green or blue light, so they're slightly dimmer at the same brightness setting.

  • Pure white 6500K: your screen at full white. Brightest; best for lighting and tracing.
  • Daylight 5500K: close to midday sunlight and the standard "daylight" balance in photography. A good neutral for checking makeup or product colors.
  • Soft daylight 5000K: a touch warmer. Try it when you look pale or blue on video calls.
  • Neutral 4000K: like a neutral-white office lamp, comfortable for desk work and reading.
  • Warm white 2700K: similar to a typical warm-white household LED bulb.
  • Candle 1900K: a deep, orange glow. Turn the brightness down for a soft night light.
  • Cool white 8000K: crisp, bluish light.

What people use a white screen for

A plain white screen turns your phone, tablet or laptop into a large, soft light panel.

  • Video call and webcam light: if your face looks dark on Zoom, Teams or Meet, a white screen on a tablet or a pop-out window beside the call adds light. The closer the screen is to your face, the stronger the effect.
  • Makeup and selfie light: an even fill light in a dim room. If you want to see yourself at the same time, use the ring light in our online mirror.
  • Tracing (light box): lay thin paper over a tablet showing a white screen and the drawing underneath shows through. Use a screen protector to avoid scratches.
  • Small product photos: use the screen as a soft backlight or reflector to reduce harsh shadows.
  • Screen checks: dead (black) pixels and dust under the glass stand out on white. For a full color-by-color check, use the dead pixel test.
  • Night light: choose Candle or Warm white, lower the brightness and set a timer.

Tips for more light and longer sessions

Web pages can't change your device's backlight. The brightness slider here dims the white toward gray, so maximum brightness is set by your device's display settings. For lighting, turn your device brightness all the way up and temporarily disable auto-brightness and night modes such as Night Shift, Night Light or blue light filters — they tint the white screen yellow.

Many OLED phones, TVs and monitors automatically limit brightness when the whole screen is bright, to control power and heat. That's why a full white screen can look dimmer than a small white window on OLED. A uniform white screen has no pattern to burn in, but long sessions at high brightness drain the battery and generate heat, so use the timer.

Staring straight into a bright white screen for a long time is tiring for the eyes. As a light, place the screen slightly to the side of or above your face, and pick a warm, low setting at night.

Keyboard shortcuts

On a computer you can control everything from the keyboard.

  • F: start the white screen
  • Esc: exit
  • ↑ ↓: brightness ±5%
  • ← →: color temperature ±250K
  • 1–7: presets (Pure white, Cool white, Daylight, Soft daylight, Neutral, Warm white, Candle)
  • H or Space: show or hide the controls

FAQ

Why can I still see the address bar on my iPhone?

Safari on iPhone often doesn't let ordinary web pages enter true full screen. When that happens the white screen fills the page area instead, so parts of the browser toolbar may stay visible; turning the phone sideways gives you a larger white area. Android browsers, iPad and desktop browsers cover the entire screen.

Can it make my screen brighter than its maximum?

No. A web page can't change the backlight, so the brightest setting is your device brightness at maximum, this tool at 100% and Pure white (6500K). Other color temperatures reduce one or more color channels and are a little dimmer.

Will my screen stay on?

With Keep screen on checked, the page asks the browser to keep the display awake while the white screen is showing. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox support this; if yours doesn't, you'll see a note. Battery-saver modes may refuse the request.

Is a white screen bad for OLED displays?

A full white screen is uniform, so it won't burn a shape like a logo or taskbar into the panel. OLED pixels do age faster the brighter and longer they're lit, and the battery and heat load go up, so use it as long as you need and let the auto-off timer close it.

What color temperature is best for video calls?

There's no single right answer, but neutral daylight around 5000–5500K usually gives natural skin tones. If your room has warm yellow bulbs, around 4000K blends in better. Your webcam's auto white balance will adjust too, so tweak while watching your preview.

Do I need to install anything or sign up?

No. It runs entirely in your browser and sends nothing to a server. Once the page has loaded, the white screen keeps working even if you go offline.

Do you have a black screen or other colors?

Yes. Black screen & color screens shows black, red, green, blue and other solid colors full screen, or any color you pick by hex code.
