How to resize an image

Add one or more images, then choose a mode. Results update automatically whenever you change a setting, so batches stay consistent.

  • Pixels: type a width or height. With the chain button on, the other side follows the photo’s aspect ratio. Turn it off to force an exact size like 1200×630 and choose crop to fill, add padding, or stretch.
  • Percent: 50% halves both width and height (a quarter of the pixels).
  • Crop: pick Instagram square (1080×1080), portrait (1080×1350), Story/Reels (1080×1920), YouTube thumbnail (1280×720) or a ratio such as 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9, then drag the box to choose what to keep. With several images, use the arrows to adjust each one.

Pixels vs file size vs DPI

Pixels describe how many dots make up the image and decide how sharp it looks on screen. File size (KB/MB) depends on pixels and compression; halving both dimensions cuts pixels to a quarter and file size roughly with it. DPI only matters for printing: required pixels = inches × DPI (for example 2 inches at 300 DPI = 600 pixels).

If a form limits file size (e.g. under 200KB), use the Image Compressor, which also tunes quality. If both pixels and size are specified, resize here first, then compress.

Social media sizes

  • Instagram feed: photos display at 1080 pixels wide. Square 1080×1080 (1:1) and portrait 1080×1350 (4:5) are the common choices; taller images may be cropped on upload.
  • Stories and Reels: full-screen vertical 9:16, usually 1080×1920.
  • YouTube thumbnails: YouTube Help recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio with a minimum width of 640 pixels; 1280×720 is a widely used size that meets this.
  • Platform recommendations change from time to time, so check the platform’s help pages when exact specs matter.

Batch resizing and quality tips

  • Mixed portrait and landscape photos? Use Long edge (e.g. 1280) so every image ends up a similar size.
  • Large reductions are done in halving steps to avoid jagged edges and moiré.
  • Enlarging small images makes them blurry. Keep “Never enlarge beyond the original” on unless you really need an exact larger size.
  • Save screenshots with text as PNG and photos as JPG. Files are processed on your device and saved without GPS or camera metadata.

FAQ

How do I resize without distorting the image?

Keep the aspect-ratio lock on and enter only a width or a height; the other side is calculated automatically.

How do I get exactly 1080×1080?

Use Crop mode and choose Instagram square, then drag the box. Or unlock the ratio in Pixels mode, enter 1080×1080 and pick Crop to fill or Add padding.

Does resizing reduce file size?

Yes, roughly in proportion to the number of pixels. To hit an exact limit like 100KB, use the Image Compressor.

Can I make a small image larger and sharper?

You can enlarge it, but it will not gain detail and will look softer.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
